Dzień Świętego Patryka / St. Patrick's Day

Dzień Świętego Patryka, przypadający 17 marca, jest świętem narodowym Irlandii.

Święty Patryk żył na przełomie IV i V wieku (389-461), pochodził z Brytanii, prawdopodobnie krainy nazywanej Cumbria, niektórzy historycy twierdza, że mieszkał być może w Walii...pewne jest, że nie był mieszkańcem Irlandii. W wieku 16 lat został porwany przez piratów i przewieziony jako niewolnik do Irlandii. Tam też jako pasterz owiec miał wiele czasu na rozmowy z Bogiem, to właśnie wtedy zdecydował się poświęcić krzewieniu nauki Chrystusa. Dzięki boskiej pomocy, jak głoszą później napisane relacje, Patryk zbiegł z niewoli i powrócił do Brytanii. Przebywając już w rodzinnym domu miał proroczy sen, w którym Bóg nakazał mu powrót do Irlandii i chrystianizację tego, wówczas pogańskiego, kraju.
